Reasons Why a Blog Loses Readers

Millions of internet writers maintain blogs on a variety of different subjects, however not all bloggers are able to maintain a successful site.

For most bloggers, maintaining a successful blog means building a strong readership and internet following among other people with similar interests to the blog's genre. However, not all bloggers know how to keep the attention of their readers, or simply allow their blogs to fall on the wayside. Here are a few major reasons why blogs can fail on the internet and what writers should focus on instead.

Infrequent Posts and Lack of Content

The obvious way for a writer to build a strong readership for his or her blog is to keep the site's content current. However, this is perhaps the most frequently-quoted reason why a blog can fail on the internet. In other words, writers can get very lazy and do not keep up with blog posts, responding to readers comments, or promoting their websites. On average, a writer should update his or her blog at least once a week in order to keep the site's content fresh, current, and interesting to potential readers. When updating, these writers should also focus on posting detailed articles and not just a few sentences.

Responding to Post Comments With Emotion

When responding to a reader's comment on a post, bloggers should be weary of becoming too involved in opinions expressed on his or her content. More often than not, writers will receive feedback based soley on opinion and not always on fact or research. These comments can typically positive for the majority, however every writer can experience negative feedback to any post at any time. Responding to a negative comment with anger or offense can be highly detrimental to the life of a blog. Readers should be advised to react to minimal post comments, and always in a professional manner.

Site Errors and Weak Hosting

Another reason why many bloggers choose to abandon a site is due to the domain's server host. While this is typically not the fault of the writer, he or she is essentially at the mercy of a third-party server host in order to keep a specific domain name. For example, websites like GoDaddy.com are great ways to start a blog with a unique URL name, however even the most seasoned companies can experience downtime with their servers. As a result, it is in the blogger's best interest to research all available companies and domain hosts before making a purchase.

Whenever starting a new blog, writers should be aware that there is a lot of work and maintenance needed in order to make the site successful. Keep content new and current is only a small piece of the puzzle, as other factors not necessarily tied to the writer can also play a part in a blog's readership. However, writers can focus on those aspects which he or she has complete control over in order increase the chances of a particular blog taking off with readers.
